Volunteers take time to give Granby seniors a good meal

GRANBY, Mo. — A number of seniors in Granby receive generosity in the form of food, thanks to a handful of volunteers.

It happens every Thursday at the Granby Senior Center. Anywhere from 30 to 50 seniors usually attend, and are fed by donated food, compliments of the Area Agency on Aging.

One of the volunteers is Granby Mayor, Jamie Conway — who says this weekly event started a couple of months ago — in hopes of strengthening the feel of community around town.

“We need to have something going on for seniors here, especially for the ones who have lost their significant other over time. They have something to come to and start meeting and visiting people within their own town. I’m just excited to see these guys getting out and enjoying themselves,” said Mayor Conway.

Gaylen Kelly has been spending his last few Thursdays’ volunteering for Granby’s seniors.

“It’s very important because it gives our seniors something to do. There isn’t a lot, it’s a small town, so there’s not a lot of things going on. It gives them a chance to come and socialize and eat together,” said Kelly.

The lunch takes place every Thursday from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Senior Center. It’s located directly across the street from Granby City Hall.
