Washington County Sheriff’s Office warning residents about scam

WASHINGTON COUNTY, Ga. (WJBF) – The Washington County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents about a scam after receiving numerous complaints.

According to the Washington County Sheriff, the Sheriff’s Office is receiving several complaints about someone calling residents claiming to be a Deputy with the “Washington County Sheriff’s Department” and telling people that they have missed an audit on a PPE loan and that there is a detainer on them.

Sheriff Cochran says in a statement informing the public that Georgia has Sheriff’s Offices and not Sheriff’s Departments.

Sheriff Cochran also states that the Washington County Sheriff’s Office does not handle Federal matters such as a PPE loan, and that this is a scam stating that the Sheriff’s Office will never call anyone about anything like this.

According to authorities, the number that shows up on the caller ID are several numbers starting with (478) 346-xxxx, so please do not answer or call the number back.

Sheriff Cochran advises that if you did not give the scammers any banking or personal information, you shouldn’t be worried, but if you happened to already given them this information, please call 911.
