WATCH: Man steals clerk’s shotgun from behind register

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — After a woman’s card was declined at a gas station, several men robbed a clerk, stealing a shotgun and money, Memphis Police say.

On June 14, officers responded to a robbery at Horn Lake Express in the 3100 block of New Horn Lake Road.

A woman went into the store and tried to buy some items, but her debit card was declined.

She started arguing with the clerk and then went outside and told several men she was with what happened, police say.

The men went into the store, and the clerk walked away from the counter to explain the incident to them. Video showed one of the suspects going behind the counter and stealing money and a shotgun.

MPD says the clerk tried to stop the suspect but was assaulted.

While trying to deal with the man who stole the weapon, another suspect went behind the counter and stole more money. According to reports, the clerk tried to stop him, but they both began wrestling over the funds.

Police say all the other suspects started telling the man with the shotgun to shoot the clerk. The employee then retreated behind the counter for safety.

The suspects fled the vehicle in a dark-colored Chrysler sedan and a tan Honda Civic, reports state.

The owner of the store says he has only owned the store for eight months and that the people in the video are frequent customers. But unfortunately, his business often deals with theft, he says.

“So it happens every day for the stealing here,” he said. “We just got here. So we need some more patrol over here.”

The owner says he acknowledges the police are busy but says he needs help. Not just from officers but those living nearby as well to keep an eye out for those committing crimes.

He says if they continue to be targeted they will have to leave.

“All the customers are not bad here,” he said. “We try to serve the customer, we try to serve all of the neighborhood.”
