Watch Serena Williams Totally Embrace Defeat in New Gatorade Commercial
You’d never even think of calling Serena Williams a loser, but the reality is that yes, the tennis champ has indeed lost a match before.
In fact, losses have been a major part of her headline-making career. In a new commercial for Gatorade titled “Make Defeat Your Fuel,” Williams joins a crew of titan athletes, each tackling the topic of defeat and welcoming it with arms wide open. As the minute-long clip rolls, NBA superstar Michael Jordan turns to the camera, saying, “You want to know the secret to victory? Fail to make the varsity team,” he says.
Athletes like Peyton Manning and Matt Ryan share experiences of making waves for the wrong reason (aka not winning). But it’s Williams who stands out to us. “Be on the wrong side of the biggest upset in your sport,” she says as she walks onto the tennis court, potentially referring to her 2015 loss to Roberta Vinci at the US Open.
Of course, Williams keeps her cool in the video, giving us another reason to believe the woman has nothing but badass bones in her body. In addition to clapping back at fans and newsmakers recently, she’s also fully embracing all things maternity, and even posing nude while pregnant.
