Update on water main break at Raw Water Pumping Station

AUGUSTA, Ga. (WJBF) – A popular entry-way to the Augusta Canal trail looks like it’s been hit by a bomb.

A giant crater is what’s left at the end of the foot bridge across the canal from Eisenhower Park.

This, after a large water main broke last night at the pumping station and released more than a million gallons of water, according to the Augusta Utilities department.

The canal trail can still be used, but it will be at least a couple of weeks before repairs are made and the bridge can re-open.

Ricky Baldwin, an Augusta resident, said he will miss the bridge.

“It’s a great entrance, right here. It’s one of the easiest ways towards the middle of the canal,” said Baldwin. “So, yeah, we’ll definitely miss the bridge. Took out the water fountain too – there used to be a water fountain here. That’s gone.”

The Augusta Utilities department says even with the one pipe out of commission there are other mains, so water delivery is not being impacted.

Director Wes Byne pointed out that the 30-inch pipe that broke is 130 years old.
