WESTLAND — The Wayne-Westland Community Schools Board of Education has placed Superintendent John Dignan on administrative leave.

Dignan, who was hired in 2020, has been criticized by the community for, critics say, allowing a $28 million budget shortfall last school year. School board President Bradley Gray sent a letter to families Wednesday, June 5, announcing the decision after a closed session Tuesday, June 4.

Gray said Jennifer Curry, assistant superintendent of curriculum, instruction and assessment, will serve as as the acting superintendent for the time being.

"The district’s leadership team will continue to work with the faculty and staff to ensure the positive completion of the school year for all our students, while remaining focused on the strategic priorities of our school district," Gray wrote.

Jenny Johnson, the district's director of communications, declined to comment on whether Dignan's leave will or will not be paid.
