Durham sheriff names woman killed in officer-involved shooting. One deputy on leave

The Durham County Sheriff’s Office has identified the woman killed in an “officer-involved shooting” Tuesday after allegedly pointing a shotgun at deputies in Bahama.

Stephanie Wilson, 28, was at home on John Jones Road when deputies responded just before 3:30 p.m. to a disturbance in the northern Durham County community.

They found Wilson who they said aimed a shotgun at deputies multiple times despite attempts to get her to put the gun down, the Sheriff’s Office stated in a news release.

She died following the shooting at approximately 4 p.m. The Sheriff’s Office did not provide any other details, including exactly how she died, but said a deputy was placed on administrative leave after the incident, which is standard procedure.

ABC11, The News & Observer’s media partner, reported that neighbors said Wilson was renting part of the house.

The case is under investigation, and the State Bureau of Investigation and Durham County District Attorney’s Office have been notified. The SBI will conduct an independent criminal investigation and report its findings.

The name of the deputy placed on leave was not released.

“We are at the very beginning of this investigation and I ask that the public allow time for the facts to come out,” Sheriff Clarence Birkhead said in a release Tuesday night. “Myself and my deputies will cooperate fully with the SBI and the DA’s Office as they conduct their investigations. In addition, the Sheriff’s Office will conduct a full internal investigation, to include a use of force policy review for this incident.”
