Young Woman and the Sea, the new Disney film starring Daisy Ridley, has landed a fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

The biographical sports drama tells the true story of Gertrude ‘Trudy’ Ederle (Ridley), an American swimmer who, in 1926, aimed to become the first woman to swim across the English Channel.

Directed by Joachim Rønning, the supporting cast includes Christopher Eccleston, Stephen Graham, Tilda Cobham-Hervey and Kim Bodnia, with producer Jerry Bruckheimer backing the project.

Ahead of the film’s release in cinemas on Friday (May 31), the first reviews have come in, with Ridley’s performance being lauded as the film landed an impressive 85% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes from its first 46 reviews.

A selection of reviews can be read below:

Variety

“Joachim Rønning’s classically glorious Young Woman and The Sea is a defiantly big-screen biopic that both earns one’s genuine tears, and inspires everyone of all ages to dream a little bigger, go a little further.”

The Times

“It’s impossibly moving, and speaks of deeper yearnings, and collective human needs, and the kind of grandiose ideas that are not normally addressed by glossy Disney biopics.”

The Independent

“It may sound a little silly or slight to mention, but Disney’s Young Woman and the Sea is saved from the grim pedestrianism of the Hollywood biopic by a smile. It switches on, like a lightbulb in a dark basement, across the face of its star, Daisy Ridley.”

Associated Press

“A classically made and effectively stirring sports drama for everyone that feels right on the big screen. Families with young daughters should make this a special priority – this is one of those empowering stories that (mostly) avoids cloying clichés.”

The Observer

The story of Trudy Ederle becoming the first woman to swim the English Channel is a throwback to formative Disney sports movies like Cool Runnings and The Rookie.”

Young Woman and the Sea is released in cinemas on May 31.
