Zorn Park play equipment, Sk8 Park ribbon cuttings set in Harbor Springs

HARBOR SPRINGS — It's time to celebrate in Harbor Springs, with two long-term projects crossing the finish line and being celebrated with ribbon cutting ceremonies.

From noon to 1 p.m. on Saturday, June 22, Harbor Springs will be welcoming people for a ribbon cutting at the new play equipment at Zorn Park. There will be ice cream available for purchase for $2.

Until 2020, playground equipment sat at the west end of the beach, but it had to be removed due to high water levels. Now, there's new equipment in the park available for children to play on.

The decision to bring the play equipment was a hot topic in Harbor Springs back in 2022, with some residents asking for the park to remain a play structure free zone. After many meetings discussing the issue, the process began to bring equipment back in.

"It looks beautiful, like it's always been there," Parks and Recreation director Rachel Roon said about the new play equipment. "I just really appreciate driving by and seeing the kids play on it. It's a really nice feeling and I hope everyone involved in the process feels that way about it."

The play equipment has been set up in the park since around Memorial Day weekend, Roon said.

Next week, the city is hosting a ribbon cutting at the Harbor Springs Sk8 Park, scheduled for 5-7 p.m. on Wednesday, June 26.

While the Sk8 Park opened for use last fall, the landscaping was not complete. Now that the park is in its final form, the city is celebrating with a ribbon cutting.

Roon said "it's such a nice feeling" seeing the park being used and having a nice scene as an entrance into the city. She said getting this park completed has been in the works for three years, so to cross the finish line on the project is exciting.

"People should come out and celebrate because it's for them," Roon said about the ribbon cuttings. "It's for all of our parks patrons. It's not just for the city of Harbor Springs, it's not just for the parks department. We do these projects for the general public, and we want (people) to know that we appreciate our park patrons and that they are welcome to come and utilize all of our amenities and everything we have to offer."
