Melissa Joan Hart ripped for insensitive Hurricane Maria post
File this one under first-world problems.
Melissa Joan Hart groaned to her 720,000-plus followers on Twitter (and 650,000 on Instagram) that her family vacation in the Caribbean was canceled due to Hurricane Maria. The actress planned to go to Nickelodeon Hotels & Resorts in Punta Cana, Dominican Republic, with her family.
“And just like that, our family vacation is canceled,” she captioned a screenshot of a notification announcing that Maria had made landfall on the island of Dominica. “Such a bummer but we plan to hit the @nickresortpuntacana resort another time this year.”
The former Sabrina, the Teenage Witch star, 41, shared the complaint on both Instagram and Twitter before she was ridiculed for the tone-deaf posts. Hart quickly deleted the message on both platforms, but you know the good ol’ internet … it still lives on.

Backlash online was swift and brutal.
First, Punta Cana is the Dominican Republic, not Dominica. And it’s better to be “bummed” about death, destruction there.

I think you should be more concerned with the people that live there instead of your meaningless vacation.

Oh, we understood that your main thoughts are about your cancelled vacation. What a bummer indeed. #BeCompassionate

@MelissaJoanHart, how about donating the cost of your vacation to the poor people who are suffering because of the recent hurricanes.

The actress hasn’t addressed the incident but seems to be attempting to make up for the gaffe with other posts.
On Wednesday, she reposted a message from Salma Hayek, who donated $100,000 to Mexico’s earthquake victims.

She also prayed for Mexico after Tuesday’s 7.1 earthquake…

…and attempted some “light humor” regarding the hurricanes.

In a Facebook post, the Nickelodeon Hotels & Resorts revealed that they were evacuating guests, beginning on Wednesday. “If you are scheduled to travel within the next week to the resort, please DM us and we are happy to share our official Hurricane Policy with you,” the company shared.
Wonder if Melissa Joan Hart has slid through their DMs yet?
