Attention, Princes and Princesses: Disney Unveils an Awesome ‘Interactive Wedding Cake’

Attention, brides-to-be! The magic of Disney hopes to bring a new and delicious technology to your upcoming nuptial celebration: the smart wedding cake.

Shown in the above video, Disney has added a “cake projection mapping” option to its “Wishes Collection” wedding catering package. This whole-new-world dessert display essentially turns the centerpiece of your wedding reception into an animated (though still edible) laser light show.

Disney says the animations projected onto the cake are also customizable. Couples can choose to display anything from personal slideshows to lovey-dovey quotes from favorite poems — things that aren’t necessarily Mickey Mouse-related. Though, to be honest, we’re not sure why any 2014-2015 wedding wouldn’t be Frozen-themed.

For some years now, Disney has been hard at work trying to bring this technology to life. (Disney, in fact, has an impressive technology research wing of its own that is closely associated with Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh.) According to a report on a 2010 patent filing by the company, the smart cake works through the combination of a light-projection setup and coordinated sensors, with the former ostensibly being capable of detecting and reacting to things like the cake being cut. No mention of those features in Disney’s blog, but perhaps it’s coming in the Smart Wedding Cake 2.0?

Of course the semi-bitter icing on top of this smart cake is that the wedding package it comes with is being offered at a starting price of $12,000. Since you were going to pay that to get the Seven Dwarfs to be ushers on your big day, anyhow, we can’t imagine this is too big of a deal, however.

Meanwhile, we’ll be waiting for Disney’s delectable gadget to be available in, say, a bachelor party-type variant. Until that’s available, however, we still think this new wedding celebration technology takes the cake.
