Frustrated Whoopi Goldberg: ‘I Am Black’
On The View Monday, Whoopi Goldberg got passionate regarding the “African-American” label. A talk about diversity in television and film led guest host Sara Haines to posit a question about race. “I’ve heard that you don’t say the term ‘African-American’; you just call people ‘black’ now,” said Haines, addressing Whoopi specifically since she was the only one at the table qualified to answer.
Goldberg outlined several points about the concept of the “American” suffix attached to someone’s racial background. “Every time you hyphenate ‘American,’ any time you put something in front of it, it’s like you’re not a real American,” said Goldberg. “Well, I’m a whole lot of all-American.” She also told viewers to keep their tweets to themselves, as Goldberg’s opinions tend to polarize her followers. There was still room to poke fun at the subject, however, as Goldberg and Haines recalled a story in which Haines accidentally called Goldberg “Oprah” when trying to get her attention.
