Miss Colombia and Steve Harvey Talk It Out

A day after sitting down to talk with Miss Universe, Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach of the Philippines, Steve Harvey chatted with the woman he wronged in that competition. Ariadna Gutiérrez, better known as Miss Colombia, was Miss Universe for all of a few minutes last December before Steve Harvey came back onstage to announce he had crowned her by mistake — and the show took away her title. Harvey took time to apologize to her on his show Tuesday.

“You’re the one person that I really wanted to talk to. Because of the mistake I made, I cast you into a spotlight, a place that I never intended to,” an emotional Harvey said. “I really — I’m beyond sorry for what happened that night, and that it was you.”

Gutiérrez explained why she was noticeably quiet about the situation immediately after it happened. “I needed time to be with my family, like, to calm down, to think about what I’m going to say now,” she said. “What I’m going to do now. I’m ready to move on. This is our destiny; that is why we are here.”

Putting himself on the spot, Harvey asked, “Genuinely, how did you feel about how I handled the situation?” “You’ve got to learn how to read cards,” Gutiérrez teased. Harvey then asked her if he was going to be the subject of litigation because of the error, but he was assured that Miss Colombia was not going to take his mansion.

Ultimately, it was a nice sitdown, and Gutiérrez and Harvey were able to laugh off the incident. “I thought you were about to make a joke,” Gutiérrez said about the night of the pageant. “That would have been the worst damn joke I’ve ever written in my life,” Harvey replied. Gutiérrez said she thought it would be, “You know, like Oprah. ‘You’re Miss Universe! You’re Miss Universe! Everyone is Miss Universe!’”
