Rockies' bullpen collapses in 5-4 loss to Oakland A's

Spoiler alert: The Rockies' bullpen is about as volatile as Colorado's May weather. On a night when shortstop Ezequiel Tovar had the first two-homer game of his young career and Cal Quantrill made another terrific start, the Rockies found a way to lose, 5-4, to the Athletics Tuesday night at the Oakland Coliseum. After a heartening seven-game winning streak, Colorado has now dropped four straight. Oakland snapped its eight-game losing streak.

Rockies Journal: Cal Quantrill making no excuses, is thriving at Coors Field

For many major league pitchers, Colorado is Siberia, and Coors Field might as well be a gulag. The Rockies acquired him in a trade with Cleveland last November in exchange for minor-league catcher Kody Huff. Quantrill hasn't pouted or made excuses when his pitches don't behave as he expects them to at 5,280 feet. Last Thursday night, in Colorado's 9-1 rout of the Giants in LoDo, Quantrill pitched six innings, allowing one run on five hits and three walks.

Ryan McMahon homered into the Allegheny River, Cal Quantrill pitched into the eighth inning and the Colorado Rockies finally held onto a lead during a 3-2 win over the struggling Pittsburgh Pirates on Friday night. Colorado trailed in each of its first 31 games this season, a modern-era record. "I'll sleep a little better because I haven't been sleeping well at all," Rockies manager Bud Black said with a laugh after he was reminded that the streak was over. McMahon put the Rockies in front when he opened the sixth with a drive over the right-field stands against Martín Pérez for his fifth homer.
